108-year-old Mavis Celebrates with Roses

Rose Day would not be complete for the Kirkland Lions without a special delivery to a very special lady.

Mavis Glidden Bell will celebrate her 108th birthday on April 27th!

Each year with the compliments of the Kirkland Lions and particularly the club historian, Jim Montgomery, Mavis receives dozens of roses to commemorate Rose Day and her birthday.

Mavis’s first husband, Leroy Glidden, along with her 2nd husband Clyde Bell, were both Charter members of  the Kirkland Club. Her son-in-law Laverne “Shorty” Ester (daughter Beverly Ester) was a Past President of the club in the 1960’s. Many kids had their first jobs at the Glidden Pharmacy in the 50’s, 60’s & 70’s.

Mavis has been a resident for many years at Oak Crest Retirement Center in DeKalb. DGE Steve and Lion Kelly Boettger have been honored to celebrate her life and contributions to the Kirkland community in recent years since they have been delivering to her. She always has some interesting piece of history to share and she expresses her sincere thanks and appreciation to Lion Jim and the Kirkland Club for all Lions do.

Mavis continues to serve others as well; she always makes sure the roses are distributed throughout the center for all of the staff and residents to enjoy.
